St George’s Day in England remembers St George, England’s patron saint. The anniversary of his death, which is on April 23, is seen as England’s national day. According to legend, he was a soldier in the Roman army who killed a dragon and saved a princess.
To celebrate this day at Woolston we had a traditional tea party enjoying cucumber and cheese sandwiches and homemade scones. The children in 2-5’s helped to make the sandwiches cutting the cucumbers, spreading the soft cheese, grating cheese and creating various sandwiches. We also made homemade scones looking at the various ingredients weighing and measuring and then combining the ingredients to create a scone before baking in the oven. We then enjoyed these with jam and cream. They tasted delicious! The children during the day learnt about St George’s Day and enjoyed various activities painting England flags, baking, making hats for the celebration.
We also combined this celebration with the Queens 1st Birthday. Queen Elizabeth II was born on 21 April 1926, but she has another official birthday, which is usually celebrated on the second Saturday of June; this year being the 9th. We also enjoyed the tea party for the Queen’s birthday and also had some dancing in the garden and party games to follow.
The children had a lovely day!
